Staff have rules for the Beasts of Beyond Discord server we expect to be respected, please give them a read!

1) Be respectful. No racism, sexism, abuse, or anything else with harmful intent. This also means keep spoilers in mind, Try not to spoil anything from recent episodes/books/movies!
2) PG-13 content only. Beasts of Beyond is a pg13 site, and so is the Discord. nsfw content is not allowed.
3) Controversial topics have no right within this server, as they can cause discourse and disagreement within the server. This includes religion, politics, and many other topics. Keep political and religious discussions light. Talking about politics and religion in a respectful manner is fine as long as you cease the conversation when someone states their discomfort at the subject. Do not post memes, harmful jokes, or anything disrespectful about either.
4) No spamming. do not excessively flood the chat with content/images irrelevant to the conversation. this also applies to pings, do not excessively @ someone.
5) Try to use the correct channel. Obviously sometimes conversations drift to other topics, and that's perfectly okay! But instead of using general to try to generate a whole bunch of plots for your character, go to plotting for example.
6) Be yourself. Do not impersonate staff or other members. Nicknames are fine, but do not pretend to be someone you're not. This also includes keeping your Discord name relatively the same as your site display name.
7) Staff have the right to delete messages and serve reminders as they see fit. if you believe you have been treated unfairly by a staff member, please privately contact @orioooon or another staff member.

Guide to Cat Genetics

Overview
Genetics are confusing on their own, and cat genetics are even more so. This guide aims to help break down and make it easier to understand natural cat genetics for any character you may create. There won't be long scientific rambles, don't worry! I will explain the terms and the process of reaching the genetics you want, so buckle in and grab a pencil.

Genetics is what makes every living creature have different traits and different looks. Gregor Mendel realized this and began his work on discovering how these traits are passed down and how they cross-breed. Mendel is why we can breed animals and plants to have desirable characteristics or breed negative ones out. He coined most genetic terms and is still referenced by scientists who work with genetics. But, we aren't here to have a seminar on Mendel and how he discovered all this. We're here to dive into how it applies to cat genes.

So, let's start with the terms!

Terminology
▻ Heredity - The passing of traits from one generation to the next.
▻ Genetics - The study of Heredity and the passing of traits.
▻ Mono-Hybrid - An individual or strain heterozygous for one specified gene.
▹ Mono-Hybrid Cross - This is usually homozygous dominant and homozygous recessive
▻ Alleles - The variant form of a gene.
▻ Homozygous - Having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes.
▻ Heterozygous - Having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes.
▹ Dominant Allele - If the alleles of a gene are different, one allele will be expressed (determined) as the appearance; it is the dominant gene.
▹ Recessive Allele - The effect of the other allele, called recessive, is masked. Only is expressed when both alleles are recessive
▻ Phenotype - Refers to an observable trait, like hair, fur color, eye color, etc.
▻ Genotype - The genetic makeup of an organism. Ex: BBGGDD {B=Black G= Gold D= Dense}
▻ Dihybrid - A hybrid that is heterozygous for alleles of two different genes. Usually heterozygoud breeding.
▻ Complete Dominance - One allele is dominant and the other is recessive.
▻ Incomplete Dominance - When a dominant allele, or form of a gene, does not completely mask the effects of a recessive allele. A blend of both alleles.
▻ X-Linked Gene - The gene causing the trait or the disorder is located on the X chromosome. Not epressed the same way in males and females.

Breaking it Down
This is where it gets a tad complicated, depending on the cat's coloring. I'd suggest taking notes; that way you can have these in shorthand and easier to access. Now, you can use any letter in the alphabet, except x, for genetics. When you the letter "x," you have another letter than follows.

Now, let's try a simple punnet square.

Phenotypes: Purple Flower x White Flower
Genotype: PP x pp

The punnet square is set up as follows: the upper part is the mother's traits, which is "pp," and the left side is the father's traits, which in this case is "PP." Now, we're going to cross them.

"PP" is Homozygous Dominant. "Pp" is Heterozygous. "pp" is Homozygous Recessive.

Now, back to what we're here for, cat genetics. Let's say we're figuring out the genetics of a black cat with a red tabby cat. The tabby gene will be defined later, but we will disregard it for now. So, during the split of a cell, in Meiosis, the sister chromatids do something called crossing over. The two exchange alleles before becoming a single gamete. A gamete is a single trait, which would be a single letter. This letter signifies dominance or not.

First, we'll create a key:
x[sup]r[/sup]x[sup]r[/sup] = red female
x[sup]B[/sup]x[sup]B[/sup]= black
x[sup]r[/sup]y = red male
x[sup]B[/sup]y = black male
x[sup]B[/sup]x[sup]r[/sup] = tortie
D = dense
d = dilute

We now separate each gamete from the other.

X[sup]B[/sup]Y = black male
x[sup]r[/sup]x[sup]r[/sup] = red female

For our first punnett square, we will not worry about whether or not a cat is dilute or dense. For now, we create a Four-Square punnett square.

We get three unique genotypes:
x[sup]B[/sup]x[sup]r[/sup] = black tortie female
x[sup]B[/sup]Y = black male
x[sup]b[/sup]Y = red male.

This is a simple way, but we get more complex as we break down two or more factors. The genotypes above were one of the most difficult of the genotype break down. That was the X-Linked Genotypes. The non-linked are called autosomal; this is when gender doesn't play a factor. Remember the flower punnett square? That one is autosomal. So, we've done two types of punnett squares: X-Linked and Autosomal.

We will use our key from before:
x[sup]r[/sup]x[sup]r[/sup] = red female
x[sup]B[/sup]x[sup]B[/sup]= black
x[sup]r[/sup]y = red male
x[sup]B[/sup]y = black male
x[sup]B[/sup]x[sup]r[/sup] = tortie
D = dense
d = dilute

Now, we'll assume that both are Heterozygous for dilute. This will give us more variations within our new genotypes and a bit more of a challenge.

We have a dense black male and a dense red female. Both are Heterozygous for dilute. This means that both carry dominant and recessive. The dominant just shows up as the larger lettering of the to and is often the trait that is carried, unless it is certain X-Linked, codominant, incomplete dominance, complete dominance traits.

Now, the father is going to be black and the mother a black tortie. The father carries no white spotting and neither does the mother. The father is Homozygous for dense and the mother Heterozygous.

So, we begin crossing these. We pair the genes with each other; we need four down and four across. It can get tricky here.

The phenotypes are the easy part, these are the physical appearances.

Phenotypes of Black Male x Black Tortie
Females: black female homozygous dense, black female heterozygous dense, black tortie homozygous dense, black tortie heterozygous dense
Males: black homozygous dense, black heterozygous dense, red tabby homozygous dense, red tabby heterozygous dense
I adapted the FeralFront post into this; I either rewrote parts or cut out some useless text. I made the punnett square images! I think it's easier to understand with visual aids, and it helps to be able to see how we get the results we got. I'll have links to the templates I used/made easier to write on. Everything else is things I used images from and my own sources. The link to more genetics info is from the FeralFront post. I consider the links for the disorders/disabilities section not needed to be re-linked. Agouti, White Spotting, and Tabby are better to be looked up, as I cannot give perfectly accurate information on how those are carried down; I can estimate and guess, but I cannot give solid answers for those.

▻ Genotype - The genetic makeup of an organism. Ex: BBGGDD {B=Black G= Gold D= Dense}

D = dense
d = dilute

We now separate each gamete from the other.

X[sup]B[/sup]Y = black male
x[sup]r[/sup]x[sup]r[/sup] = red female

For our first punnett square, we will not worry about whether or not a cat is dilute or dense. For now, we create a Four-Square punnett square.

We get three unique genotypes:
x[sup]B[/sup]x[sup]r[/sup] = black tortie female
x[sup]B[/sup]Y = black male
x[sup]b[/sup]Y = red male.

This is a simple way, but we get more complex as we break down two or more factors. The genotypes above were one of the most difficult of the genotype break down. That was the X-Linked Genotypes. The non-linked are called autosomal; this is when gender doesn't play a factor. Remember the flower punnett square? That one is autosomal. So, we've done two types of punnett squares: X-Linked and Autosomal.

We will use our key from before:
x[sup]r[/sup]x[sup]r[/sup] = red female
x[sup]B[/sup]x[sup]B[/sup]= black
x[sup]r[/sup]y = red male
x[sup]B[/sup]y = black male
x[sup]B[/sup]x[sup]r[/sup] = tortie
D = dense
d = dilute

Here on Beasts of Beyond, we want everyone to feel comfortable when consuming content, along with being able to avoid literature that may cause unease. Due to this, trigger warnings are advised to be used during several situations. There are a few guidelines when doing so.

1. Trigger warnings should be at the top/in the first line of each post or above the part where the content is mentioned.
2. Please state the reason for the trigger warning
3. You are more than welcome to put triggering content within a spoiler.
4. A trigger warning in the signature or a profile DOES NOT count
5. Warnings should be used in all threads, whether active/private roleplay or a biography
6. Don't know when to? Ask staff, but when in doubt, it's best to just in case!
7. Topics that require trigger warnings are:

a. Sexual assault/misconduct, including rape/incest
b. Abuse (mental, physical, child, sexual, verbal, etc)
c. Self-harm
Sometimes there's a character or group we take with us everywhere, just like a kid and their stuffed animal as a kid. Although this time... There's some rules about that. Beasts of Beyond wants to prevent plagiarism at all costs, but not prevent that safe and at home feeling. After all, reminiscing on that past nostalgia is enthralling. So here is a short guide on what you can do to follow our rules and avoiding stealing other works!

What is plagiarism?

According to Merriam-Webster, plagiarism is defined as 'to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own' or 'to use (another's production) without crediting the source.' This includes:

— Verbatim plagiarism: The act of copying another's work word for word.

Hello guys! I got bored so I decided on making a new guide for y'all because I see some people are having a tough time playing an intimidating character properly, so this is to help a little bit on those endeavors!

First things first: don't keep posting in all threads that your char is intimidating this, or intimidating that. (ex: "his intimidating gaze bore into her soul" or "his muscles rippled under his fur, making him look quite intimidating") This gets repetitive real fast and what I would consider lazy writing, not to mention people don't like being told how to feel about a certain character. Especially if the character is not actually intimidating. (and yes, I am guilty for writing like this too, sometimes. everyone makes mistakes like this, don't be hard on yourself if you find yourself writing like this! its a learning process) The "show, not tell" writing style is your friend when it comes to writing an intimidating character, and it actually works! Crazy, I know. It's a perfect way to make the reader actually feel intimidated if done right.

Here's the definition of the show, don't tell writing method:
"Show, don't tell is a technique used in various kinds of texts to allow the reader to experience the story through action, words, thoughts, senses, and feelings rather than through the author's exposition, summarization, and description."

This is telling:
"It was dark outside and the owls shrieked at shadowy figures. A cloaked man ran through the darkness."

This is showing:
"The cloaked man couldn't see well with how dark it was, knowing that it would only get darker as the winter solstice drew near and the days grew shorter. He picked up the pace as he saw figures moving around at the edge of his vision and winced as shrieking filled the air."

It takes a while to get used to the show, don't tell method, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty useful and effective.

So that's it! I know this guide is pretty short, but I that's all I can think of atm. If anything else comes up, I will edit this post, and if you want me to add something, just shoot me a pm! I'll reply back as soon as possible. Thanks for taking the time to ride this, and have a good day!
Welcome new and old BoBCats! If you're new to the site or roleplay in general, I recommend taking a look at the Newbie's Guide for some tidbits. This will basically be an expanded version of the 'How do I create a character?' part with specific references to our abilities / mutations.

How do I create a character or what are the different ways to acquire a character?

1. You don't even need to create a form or a biography! With an idea in mind, you can hop right into roleplay straight away. You can use your main account or create a subaccount for your character. For instructions on creating a subaccount, check this guide... We suggest selecting a usergroup once you've created that account so you can attribute your account to the clan you've chosen!

2. Though, if you're looking for a specific character with in-game relationships, we suggest using the Adoption Agency to see if there any slots available in a popular litter or tryouts for a high position's (such as a leader) child. Some of these adopts, especially for more popular litters, may require biographies or forms filled out to be considered for a slot.

3. You can also head to the Biography board if you wish to create a biography/tags for your own original character.

How should I set up a biography for my character?

Once again, a biography (also known as character tags / hub) is not required. Here are some key things you should definitely include:

1. Their name should obviously be included... unless they don't have one. Nothing wrong with a mysterious loner.

2. Species and their appearance should be declared also. Here on BoB, we allow all animals to be roleplayed. You may also roleplay any non-human mythical / extinct creatures within our fair limits as long as you purchase them through the shop with gems.

3. Powers/Mutations are one of the things that makes BoB unique. Some of our characters have received powers by having their users purchase powers from the shop. If you have acquired any of these, you should list them in your character's biography! Better to be through.

4. Personality is what makes a character everything. Including this is key to having your character stand out within the BoB world!

These are the basics. You can also include things like their gender, possessions, companions, enemies, and history. Remember, while none of these things are required to do, it may help other users to have a better understanding of your character by posting an in-depth biography!

How and when can I start roleplaying?

Anytime! Since we do not have a required time limit or form for you to fill out, you may hop into our role play anytime.... but how? Now that you've got a character in mind, a possible biography, or a possible subaccount, you're ready to go! There are many ways to start.
When clicking on the group you've chosen, you should see this button on the right hand sight underneath the child boards listed.
1. Introductions for new characters are common. These threads start out with a simple situation on what their character looks like with additional insight into their personality.

What is this guide for?

This guide is for people who want to maintain a character from childhood to adulthood using primarily organic development. However, you can also find tips for just doing general organic development, as well as just keeping a character from childhood to adulthood as well. The guide can be used for human or animal rp, although it was written with animal rp in mind.

What is organic development?

Organic development is developing a character primarily (or even solely) based on events that happen around them. Rather than creating plots for your character as you go, their major development is based primarily on plots caused by the environment.

How do I create a character with organic development in mind?

Assuming this character is someone you want to keep for the entirety of their lifespan, you’ll want to start with a character that’s physically young. Sometimes people prefer starting at 3-6 months so that speech is already developed and most development will be behavioral. However, my favorite way to play this sort of character is to start them at 0-1 months so that I can develop everything from speech patterns to body language to basic personality traits. Generally I just start with them having the generic personality of a little kid that doesn’t know anything so they can pick up personality traits and habits and interests as I go alone. It’s up to you how much of a blank slate you want this character to be, though, and how much you want to have pre-planned.

How do I develop unique speech patterns and personality traits?

In organic development, the best way to develop speech patterns is to take from the biggest influences that your character interacts with. Who are they speaking to on a regular, constant basis? For example, my character grew up learning Italian, French, and English at around the same time because there were all people around him that spoke it. He ended up with an accent that’s a weird combination of Italian American and Southern because the two people that influenced him the most when he was younger spoke with those accents. Whether or not you choose to do a written accent, you can still have your character pick up on certain types of phrasing or syntax. For example, maybe they have a parent who is very eloquent and so they knows lots of different words and speak often in metaphors, or maybe they have a parent who frequently swears around them and so, even though they’re barely old enough to speak full sentences, they swear frequently.

The personality is very similar to this. However, it’s a little more complicated than speech. For example, they may identify a trait as bad based on their experiences with those individuals and avoid it rather than embrace it. Also, personality is shaped by more than just those around them, it’s also based on experiences with nothing to do those close to them. It can be something as simple as being mortified when they learn prey is actually dead smaller animals so they choose to be a vegetarian to something as major as developing a phobia of the dark and loneliness when they get lost in the woods one night by themselves. While organic development is about the relationships the character establishes, it’s also about finding situations that would naturally occur in their life (or at least occur in most ‘normal’ lives) and learning how they would respond to simple crises and situations.

The basic idea for personality and speech is simply to base it off the other characters that yours constantly has to interact with, as well as simple situations or struggles they’d be confronted with over time.

How do I keep a character for that long?

Muse can fluctuate a lot but I’ve found that organic development actually helps me. There’s constant development that needs to be done or worked towards but you need to know what those goals and milestones are.

I highly recommend setting up a timeline, especially if you choose to do body language and speech development. If you choose to go from birth to adulthood, you should have the first few months set aside specifically for when you want your character to mature in different ways. At what age will they be fluent in their first language? When do you want them to start developing aspirations and goals? What’s their first word? When do they start developing odd habits or collecting strange things? When do they stop? Try to think of anything that a parent would consider a milestone for a young child and try to plan it out.

At some point, though, you will have to bring in new plots. In organic development, most of these will probably be relational. Maybe they find a new friend or enemy or maybe they have their first crush or develop a family-like relationship with someone outside their family. From there, based on their conversations with that character and your conversations with that rper, you create plots that are naturally occuring. Maybe your character has to face rejection when their crush turns them away or maybe they disagree with the parental figure and question their beliefs and thoughts up until that point. The possibilities are endless with these sorts of plots, even if they might seems small in the grand scheme of things. This will be when you get most of your character’s basic traits so these relationships are very important in organic development.

You may want to have some big plots planned out (so they can have some sort of supernatural aspects if you want or maybe some kind of angst regarding their health) but it’s important to remember that plots stay as ‘big picture’ items. Organic development is mostly involved with how you define your character’s personality. It’s about the little moments and the tipping points more than it is about whatever larger plots you choose to create. Personally, in the case of both characters I’ve done this way, I had one plot initially planned for both of them. These plots did affect them greatly but it was important to me that they weren’t so big that they lost a sense of who they were. For anything like that, I wanted it to occur naturally. It’s up to you how much of this you want to do, though.

As time went on and I got a better idea of the characters and what they’d become (and as they grew to become adults, as development tends to slow a little in my experience), I would add plots that would make them stretch those existing traits that organic development had given them. I knew my character was forgiving but were there limits to that? I knew my character was relatively non-violent but would he ever act out violently in emergencies? These were all questions that needed to be asked at some point and so I allowed them into situations that gave me answers. The idea is never to change the character completely but to find their limits and traits and how those might shift with various events.

This is important to keeping a character because if they grow stagnant in development, you’ll get bored playing them. If you ever find yourself hitting a lull, try thinking of something that could either develop a new trait or stretch one that already exists within the character.

The key to not growing bored with organically built characters is that, no matter how small it is, they are always moving in some sort of development and that they never stop, even if they slow down. It’s alright if they become stable with who they are and have a good idea of themselves but make sure that they always have the opportunity to learn more about themselves so that you, as the writer, can also learn more about them (as well as all the people that are reading about this character).
