she's escorted into the throne room by the crownsguard, footsteps small and tentative with her hands clasped shakily in front of her - her back is straight but her head hangs low, a submissive gesture, and she only stops walking when both heavy hands on her arms pull her back. she can't see anything beyond the darkness, the softer padding inside the steel eye-mask fitted around the upper part of her head. she knows that there's a scrape under her right eye from where an edge has chipped and dug into her skin, but knows better than to reach up and adjust it - the guards would beat her if she did.
"you may leave us."
she hears the heavy footsteps recede, farther and farther away from her as they march out of the cavernous room and its haunted echoes. when they fade away, there's only silence left behind - not even a breath could be heard for what feels like seconds, minutes, hours, until - footsteps, in front of her, closer and closer until she can feel a hot breath panning across her lips. there's a shifting of cloth, of limbs, and then she feels one hand wrapping tight around her throat, the other moving her to touch the mask over her eyes.
"you know, this is a pretty look on you," he whispers into her ear, mouth close enough to her skin that she shudders and instinctively takes a step back but he notices, he notices and suddenly his grasp on her is tighter, restricting her breathing, the other hand clutching at her jaw until she's sure it's close to breaking. his grip releases, traces a line across her cheek to her mask, nudging it one before grabbing it by the fingertips and ripping it off completely. the sharpened edge digs into her skin as it goes, carving a deep line of crimson from the crest of her cheekbone to somewhere near her ear and he grabs harder, picks her up and slams her body to the nearest pillar. "LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO, MUTT."
